Enjoy a unique experience as you visit Charles Darwin University (CDU), the only university based in the Northern Territory. Starting off the tour at the Outdoor Ceremonial Space of the First Nations Leadership Building Blue 2, our very own Larrakia academic-in-residence Dr. Bilawara Lee will open the event with a Welcome to Country followed by the traditional Smoking Ceremony.
Professor Rueben Bolt, Deputy Vice-Chancellor First Nations Leadership, will speak about the remarkable research of First Nations and then you will learn about the innovative research being undertaken at CDU from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation Professor Steve Rogers. Hear from two of our amazing researchers, Dr Carol Palmer and Professor Sam Banks, both from the Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods, as they share with you their world-class projects.
You will then participate in a tour of the excellent facilities at CDU:
-
The North Australia Centre for Autonomous Systems (NACAS) Lab houses state-of-the-art facilities for designing, constructing, and testing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones. The facilities include a carbon fiber placement robot, Flight Test Stands, and a large indoor drone flight test enclosure for researching UAV control systems and cybersecurity.
-
The Advanced Manufacturing Alliance, a joint initiative that utilises a world-first 3D metal printing technology, was formed in partnership with SPEE3D. The introduction of SPEE3D’s technology through the collaboration shortens manufacturing lead times, reduces cost and enables rapid product design iterations.
-
The Pavement Lab is one of the leading laboratories of its kind in Australia that tests road surfaces. In collaboration with the Northern Territory Government, this great facility was established to test the use of recycled materials in remote NT roads and how different asphalt mixtures react to the territory’s environmental conditions.
-
The Fire Mapping virtual lab lets you “play with fire” and explore the effects of a range of weather and landscape variables on fire behaviour which can assist thinking about strategic fire management. The fire spread simulation game, Incendiary, projects models onto sand that is shaped to fit the terrain or 3D printed landscapes to display complex information.
After filling your brain with significant information about CDU, what better way to end the tour but to fill your belly with a delightful lunch served in the Savanna Room at the Northern Institute.
Take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to see Charles Darwin University and witness its outstanding innovative research and the wonderful people behind the work.
